Sea Star

Would you like to swing on a star?
Carry moonbeams home in a jar?
And be better off than you are?
Or would you rather be a mule?”

– Swinging on a Star, Van Heusen/Burke

I’m flicking through channels, hunting for something warming… or lighthearted…or inspiring.  The onscreen entertainment guide is little help… often saying “To be announced,” or listing a program title only, sans description.  Leaving me to guesswork… or coming in on something half-way through.

I light on a bit of wonder that leaves my heart dusted with star shine.

He’s talking about three clues hiding like jewels-to-be-mined… in our everyday world.   Faceted and purposely planted, sometimes even tossed at our feet, by a Jeweler who longs to be revealed. So that even if the finder has never heard… or never read… His love story can spill out before them.  Hide ‘n seek evidence to joyous Truth He is wooing us to know… hold in our hearts…  and bear the light.

  • A particular kind of catfish with a backbone perfectly formed into a cross.
  • Tiny stones that can be found in various places all over the world, naturally-shaped and formed by heat and pressure into three styles of crosses (Roman, Maltese and St. Andrew style)…like jewelry pendants…
  • And most incredible of all… the sand dollar…also known as the Sea Star:

Somewhere… I’ve heard something of this before, but don’t remember the details.

I watch as photos flash onscreen of this intricate one-of-a-kind marvel.  Listen as he describes how one side holds a design like a Christmas poinsettia.  On the flip side, an Easter Lily… with a star of Bethlehem at it’s center… Surrounded by five oval holes… wounds… across the shell…

But that’s not all, he says…for the Bridegroom always saves the best for last.

Crack open a sand dollar…and out pour five pieces that look awesomely like tiny white doves.  Five, the biblical number for grace…

A STAR… a humble birth…suffering…Resurrection… and Grace.

The whole story etched like a secret code on a gift from the sea… He was born, spilled out His Life for us, so the Holy Spirit could now reside in us…

It’s then I remember the Lord’s promise…

However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. – John 16:7 (amplified version)

I click off the television.  Ponder this moonbean-in-a-jar wonder.

Words of another star song fill my mind, light on my lips… like one more whispered message of “undercover prayer” from His heart to mine…and nowto yours

O star of wonder, star of night,                                                                                                          Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding                                                              Guide us to thy perfect Light.

  1. Diane says:

I didn’t see that show, but I’ve heard that about the sand dollar. Romans 1:20: “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

    Amen and Amen!!!

  2. I was thinking of that verse too, but not sure where it was. Thanks, Diane!

I just looked that up in The Message version and I like how this reads: “The basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being.”

  3. Sandee says:

God’s creativity in reaching us is so awesome and so humbling. No matter how far away we run, He will not forsake us. I am so grateful for that promise.

  4. O Sandee, how right you are. I was just going to add to my last comment to say something exactly like that. 🙂 I’m so grateful that He loves us so much to create so many ways to help us know Him. That He is always reaching out to us, calling to our hearts and letting us know we are so loved!

  5. Pam, please allow me to share on your page this song. I don’t know if you have heard of this one but when this song was used as a theme song for a Korea soap aired here in our country, it captured my heart and made me delight in God’s wonder. The simplicity and clarity of the song is so beautiful. The words also can be connected to the wondrous things God has made…. we find them in little everyday things yet we often ignore……

Higher than the sky above you
    Clearer than blue
Brighter than the rays of sunshine
    Warmer than what you feel
More than all the wonders you see
    It’s the most wonderful thing

Brighter than the living colors of flowers you see
Sweeter than the touch of water
    Flowing from the mountain spring
More than all the wonders you see
    It’s the most wonderful thing

    One love…
    I love you so
    Love is the beautiful one
    I love you so
    Love is the beautiful one
    All we need is love
    Real love

Marvel at the sight of green fields
    Amazingly seen
Watch the colors of the rainbow
    It’s a miracle you see
More than all the wonders can be
    But there’s more than that

    One Love…
    I love you so

    ONE LOVE BY ACEL BISA

Jesus is the beautiful One, One love, Real love.

These simple delightful things around us when viewed so lovingly reflects the majesty of our Creator….. how could we not be content? how could we be less than joyful? How could we not extend such love to others who need them. Let His light so shine!!!!

  6. Thanks, Lolita. I’ve never heard it…but the words, in the light of His wonder, are lovely. Thank you for sharing 🙂
